To request replacement adoption papers, please contact the manufacturer with the following details: front and back photos of the doll unclothed, the original name of the doll, the name of the first owner of the doll, and the doll's registration number. Cabbage Patch dolls, originally known as Little People, became a popular toy in the early 1980s.
The first dolls were made of material through a process known as needle molding and came with their own individualized birth certificates. The Little People line was bought by the toy company Coleco, who changed the name to Cabbage Patch Kids, at which point they were made of a combination of fabric and vinyl. There have been many types of Cabbage Patch Kid toys since they first appeared. Each of the subsequent licensing companies, including Hasbro, Toys R Us and Mattel, have offered specialty lines that do tricks, have special clothing or relate to occasions like the Birthday Kids line.

Original dolls and those still made by Xavier Roberts, the original doll maker, can fetch anywhere from six to 10 times the amount of a mass-produced and licensed version of the toy. The dolls made by Roberts himself are called Cabbage Patch Original Kids to distinguish them from the dolls licensed by toy companies. The value of Cabbage Patch dolls depends on their rarity and their popularity with collectors. For example, a set of dolls based on the 2008 United States Presidential candidates was listed for more than $59,000 and a doll based on Donald Trump was listed for nearly $7,000.

On Etsy.com, Cabbage Patch dolls from the 1980s are priced in the $100 to $300 range, as of 2015. Dolls that come with an intact box and all original accessories, including outfit, socks, shoes, ribbons and birth certificate, are more valuable. The color of the Xavier Roberts signature, printed on the left butt cheek of every doll, reveals its year of manufacture. Black signatures indicate a doll that is from 1983 or earlier. Certain head molds and hairstyles are more coveted because they were made in limited quantities.
Red-haired dolls are particularly rare. Dolls in pristine condition, without any flaws or damage, are higher in value.
