Avg Antivirus For Windows 98
What sort of question is that? They're different products, for gosh sakes. You ask ten different people about what is the best product for something and you will probably get AT LEAST ten different answers. I used to use McAfee, since it was provided for free at a corporation I used to work. But, since then I have gone to AVG, and not only is it easy - since it maintains itself, but also my startup and shutdown times have been reduced by at least 50%.
My startup time used to be about a minute and a half, and now it is about a half minute. I get the same sort of improvement in shutting down. Oh, and I have never gotten a virus problem. Problem with Avast is on my computer running 98SE I cannot reboot without exiting the anti virus program first. The computer will hang.

I keep my Norton Firewall while binning the overladen crap that comes with Norton Anti Virus. The reason I am writing this now is that I am looking for an anti virus software to work with Norton Firewall. I currently am using Clam. Why complain about updates, that is what an anti-virus is supposed to DO. How else do you get the latest virus protection? In envelope and have mr. Postman deliver it?
Nope, it must update. I would never use an Anti-V that only updated once a year. Furthermore, you can buy AVG and use advanced settings to disable auto updating. I don't think you can in free version. So your choices are this. Get something newer than 98 Deal with anti-virus updates (which is supposed to happen or simply don't have one at all, no updates, same difference) Lastly, as someone else posted, get Linux, at least you won't need security software for the time being and will be in the year 2007 without need to complain about updates slowing that old dinosaur down. However, you should check the specs before you download as even Ubuntu GG is requiring 384 RAM for install now.
